A LOCAL authority could face fines after a salmon fishery was polluted for the second time in as many months by sewerage plant effluent.

For the second time this year, effluent from Kilkenny County Council’s treatment plant on Sion Road has gone into the River Nore.

The discharge entered the salmon river for at least 24 hours last Sunday and Monday. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is already on the case and a spokesman said the sludge constituted a “serious pollution threat”.
