State to fight slop-out cases

HUNDREDS of prisoners planning to sue the State because they are or have been forced to slop out have been told by the Minister for Justice: “I’ll see you in court.”

An estimated 900 former and current prisoners have joined an action claiming their human rights were deprived because of the long-standing use of buckets to urinate and defecate during the night.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell said the State would vigorously contest each and every claim.
