COSMETIC surgery patients are regularly being sent to overcrowded accident and emergency wards because unqualified doctors who botch operations cannot deal with complications, according to the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons (IAPS).

The IAPS said some doctors engaged in the booming private cosmetic surgery trade do not have any postgraduate training.

Plastic surgeons have up to 10 years' training.
