THE citizenship referendum is likely to be a far tighter contest than previously anticipated, the latest opinion poll findings reveal.

According to an Irish Examiner/Prime Time poll, conducted by Lansdowne Market Research, the Government is in danger of losing the poll altogether and remains just a few percentage points ahead of the no side.

The poll, carried out in the European election South constituency, found just 44% of voters were in favour of denying automatic citizenship to children of non-national parents as proposed by the Government's constitutional amendment.
