Wait over for racing fans as Tramore festival begins

HORSE RACING fans are gearing up for a festival with a difference as the long-awaited four-day meeting begins today in Tramore, Co Waterford.

Tens of thousands will flock to the seaside racetrack this evening from 5.20pm for the first of three evening meetings and a family day on Sunday afternoon.

Among the star attractions tonight will be Waterford’s hurlers. Each of the Deise stars will parade a horse in the fifth race just after 7pm, racecourse manager Sue Phelan explained.

“It’s a great chance for the players to meet their fans, and vice versa. Race numbers last year were up 28% and we’re looking forward to entertaining 25,000 or more over the next four days,” she added.

Also tonight, horse trainer Paddy Mullins will be honoured for his contribution to racing at the seaside town, as will the horse, Dariole, who won at five consecutive festivals, beginning in 1999.

All of the evening meetings on today, tomorrow and Saturday begin at 5.20pm. Racing on Sunday begins at 2.35pm.
