New sports officers to work with ‘at risk’ youths

AN extra eight sports development officers are being funded to work with Dublin youngsters “at risk” of becoming involved in substance abuse.

“Sport is a valuable tool for engaging young people in positive and creative pursuits,” said Community Affairs Minister Noel Ahern yesterday.

Some €440,000 is being provided for the additional officers, who will operate in various disadvantaged areas of Dublin including Dún Laoghaire, Blanchardstown, Clondalkin and Tallaght as well as the south-inner city and the north-east area.
