Full steam ahead for marina development

A MAJOR marina plan which will transform a coastal Waterford region has cleared a final planning hurdle.

Full steam ahead for marina development

No appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanála following the granting of permission last month for a €30 million redevelopment of the harbour in Dunmore East in Co Waterford.

The project will include developing a new harbour, outside the original one.

The old harbour will be developed for smaller boats and pleasure craft. There are also plans to dredge the sea bed in the area, opening it up to larger boats.

Berthing facilities will be improved, and a new slipway will be developed.

Last month Waterford County Council approved the leisure element of the project, but on the strict proviso that the facilities be used for marine fishing and associated leisure activities only.

No cargo landing will be allowed. The Port of Waterford had objected on the grounds that if cargo handling were allowed, it might interfere with the activities at the Port of Waterford.

Construction is not due to begin for at least another nine months.
