Carthy neighbour ‘feared gun tragedy’

A NEIGHBOUR of John Carthy asked gardaí to take his shotgun from him because he feared a Dunblane-type tragedy.

John Gilligan, who was PRO of Abbeylara Handball Club, said he thought the possibility of Mr Carthy using his gun against anyone remote but he felt it “better to be safe”.

He told the Barr Tribunal he contacted gardaí some time in 1998 after consulting with two other officers of the club over a complaint that Mr Carthy had threatened some people there.
