PARENTS are smuggling drugs into their children on jail visits, a prison governor said yesterday.

Limerick Prison’s Pat Laffan was commenting after Limerick District Court sentenced a man to six months in jail after gardaí caught him trying to throw drug-filled tomatoes over the prison wall. Garrett Fitzgerald was convicted of being in possession of cannabis resin and other drugs on October 5 last year.

Mr Laffan said every possible precaution was being taken to keep drugs out of the jail: “We have put netting over the yard, we have closed-circuit TV cameras on the perimeter of the fence and in the yard.
