Gaybo is back for People in Need Telethon

VETERAN broadcaster Gay Byrne returns to RTÉ screens in late May — but for one night only.

Gaybo is back for People in Need Telethon

Gaybo's back with Ryan Tubridy to host the charity fundraiser People in Need Telethon on Friday, May 21.

"Since 1988, People in Need has raised over €28 million, distributed to thousands of organisations throughout the country, working in every community," said Gay yesterday. "The people it helps could be your neighbours, your friends or your family and, of course, the money raised in your county stays in your county."

It's been four years since the last Telethon was held, but the organisers promise to make up for lost time by serving up "adventurous and spirited" radio and television during a week of charity capers.

For openers, a group of celebrities will be take up the challenge to run a national radio station for a week.

On May 14 they will be locked away from the world and will have to man, produce and present RTÉ Charity 252 Radio for People in Need, for the next week.

Each evening, the irrepressible Gerry Ryan will broadcast an hour's highlights of how they got on warts and all on RTÉ television.

Dustin the Turkey gets in on the act as the eminently qualified main judge for the finale of Can't Sing Can't Dance contest on May 21. This final night extravaganza is the culmination of a nationwide search to find those with the most bizarre talents. Compelling viewing, as Gaybo might say.

Ryan Tubridy will present the Celebrity Charity Auction on the night, with "some amazing items" donated by celebrities up for grabs.
