THE woman at the centre of a dramatic five-day count in the last general election has declared herself a candidate in the upcoming EU elections.

Kathy Sinnott, who almost took the fifth and final seat from Fianna Fáil's John Dennehy in Cork South Central in 2002, will stand as an independent.

On the canvass trail in Kerry yesterday, Ms Sinnott said she was running for election because "we need people in Europe that understand us and represent us and represent everyday issues".
