Taxpayer to pay Brothers’ €1m bill

THE Christian Brothers have been awarded legal costs estimated at up to €1m despite losing a High Court challenge to the Child Abuse Commission.

The bill will be picked up by the taxpayer in addition to the costs incurred by the Commission in its successful defence of the challenge.

Commission lawyers got a stay on the pay-out to allow time to lodge an appeal. Commission secretary Brenda McVeigh said last night, a detailed examination of the court’s ruling would be carried out in the coming days and a decision on an appeal would follow.
