A BIG-HEARTED family which struggled to cope with their daughter’s leukaemia have raised more than €138,000 for two hospitals which helped save her life.

Michael and Breda Freyne sent out 25,000 appeals for funds to 3,500 schools, clubs, societies and from the nation’s biggest employers to the smallest firms.

The fund-raising drive was a means to try and thank the hospital for the care it provided their 21-year-old daughter, Joanne. She was as involved as any member of the family in the major appeal, despite her sickness and pain.
