New rules to ensure gardaí accountable

THE Garda Commissioner will have to stand over the financial accounts of the force under new measures being introduced by the Government.

The measures, designed to make the gardaí more accountable to the public, will see the Justice Minister set an annual list of priorities for policing. These goals will have to achieved by the gardaí.

The move follows allegations of financial impropriety in the awarding of garda contracts.
