A CONTROVERSIAL motion to expel a professor from University College Cork’s governing body was withdrawn yesterday.

The proposal to remove Professor Des Clarke, head of the university’s philosophy department, was expected to spark a divisive debate at yesterday’s scheduled meeting of the 40-member body.

But after an address by UCC president Prof Gerry Wrixon, the meeting decided to deal with the issue through an ethics committee to be set up shortly.
