Dodgy businessmen have been running rings around the taxman by starting up multiple companies to avoid paying their dues, the taxpayers’ watchdog revealed yesterday.

Substantial amounts of tax have been inappropriately written off by the Revenue because of shortcomings in the review systems, the Comptroller and Auditor General said. In his annual report, C&AG John Purcell said individuals who had large liabilities written off had systematically evaded tax over the years without detection.
