A FIRE on board a nuclear ship due to enter the Irish Sea in the next fortnight could release a plutonium cloud that would causes thousands of cancer cases, Greenpeace has warned.

The environmental group has called on the Government to deploy the navy to monitor the movements of the shipment and ensure it does not enter the 12 mile zone which represents Irish territorial waters.

Two armed freighter ships owned by British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) are bringing a cargo of rejected radioactive fuel from Japan to the Sellafield nuclear power plant in Cumbria.
