CORK County Council was accused last night of “covering up” evidence of an ancient settlement on a site earmarked for the county fire service headquarters.

But the council strongly denied the claims about the remains of a 1,000-year-old mediaeval farmstead next to Ballincollig’s fire station.

Local historian Philip O’Connor accused the council of sitting, for over a year, on evidence of what he claimed is the earliest known site of human settlement in Ballincollig.
