FIRST-TIME mothers are finding the transition to motherhood increasingly traumatic with many overwhelmed by sudden responsibility and the 24/7 nature of caring for a baby, a new study reveals.

The author of the research has recommended that a 24-hour helpline, manned by health professionals, be established to offer advice to women in the early weeks.

Coombe Women’s Hospital Midwifery tutor Kathryn Muldoon also suggested that the number of public health nurse visits be increased in the early weeks. Currently, a woman is only entitled to one home visit in the first week after leaving hospital.
