LIMERICK is looking for the country’s youngest St Patrick’s Day Parade grand marshals for its big March 17 celebration.

Shannonside search begins to find youngest Patrick’s Day grand marshals

The search is on to find the two Limerick primary school children to lead the parade as part of the new St Patrick’s Springfest 2006.

Limerick’s parade has a theme entitled: Limerick In The Future.

Springfest managers, EPM, said an art competition will be held, asking local schoolchildren to draw what they think Limerick will look like in the future. The two winners of the competition will lead the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

The two lucky winners will lead over 50 parade groups including: the Army, Limerick Harley Davidson club, the Irish Academy of Performing Arts, Centre Stage Theatre School, entrants for the Limerick International Band competition and many others.

The two marshals will take pride of place at the top of the parade in an open horse-drawn carriage - weather permitting.

A Springfest spokesperson said: “The two will be the first to lead the parade on its new route, scheduled to finish at the People’s Park, where they and their families will be guests of honour at the post-parade reception.

“From there, they can join in the family fun at the Pery Square Fair, which will take over the People’s Park.”
