A GROUP of schools has saved thousands of euro on power bills - thanks to students opting for green energy.

Students use their power to reduce fuel bills

The initiative began at Scoil Aireagail in Ballyhale, Kilkenny, where students set up a Green Schools Committee. They recently received a Green Flag award for their efforts, which included the introduction of recycling, composting and waste reduction.

They also wanted the school’s electricity to be supplied from renewable resources. This meant Kilkenny Vocational Education Committee (VEC), which manages the school, would have to make a decision to take their other schools down the same route.
