Public 'must accept incineration to defuse waste time bomb'

WE are facing a waste "time bomb" unless the public embraces incineration and abandons landfills which cause widespread water contamination, Environment Minister Dick Roche warned yesterday.

"We are never going to have zero waste, but I would prefer incinerators than a proliferation of landfills which can cause widespread contamination," he said, at the launch of a pro-incineration campaign.

The minister made his comments at the launch of a campaign outlining the case for a network of incinerators as part of an integrated solution to the country's growing waste crisis along with information on a range of other waste options.
