Automatic charge solution for end to toll-station queues

TRANSPORT Minister Séamus Brennan yesterday announced plans for a fee-paying system which will eliminate the need for motorists to queue up at tolling stations.

Department officials are examining hi-tech systems in Spain and Canada which automatically charge car owners using tolled roads.

Tolls are likely to be placed on a host of new roads built in partnership with private firms. There are just two tolled roads at present, but 11 more roads are being built under the Public Private Partnership system.
