Syrian government forces have started deploying in areas close to the Turkish border in the north-east of the country, state media has reported.

Syrian troops have seized a northern village from Islamic State in an advance towards an air base besieged by the extremists for more than a year.

Syrian troops backed by Russian air strikes are pressing ahead with an assault against rebels in central and northern Syria, according to the Syrian government and opposition activists.
