Average school class size in Irish primary schools remain among the highest in Europe with almost one-quarter of all schoolchildren in classes of 30 or more in the current school year.

Primary school education groups have warned that educational spending could be a huge political issue in next year’s local elections.

About 11,000 more primary school pupils started school this year than last year, but the allocation of teachers will not catch up until next year.
