EARLY results showed opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko has won the presidential election in Ukraine.

A pro-opposition convoy trying to rally support for presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was turned back from his rival’s home town today after Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych’s supporters blocked the road.

Wedged between troubled Ukraine and the West, Poland has plunged into the disputed Ukrainian presidential election in an attempt to mediate – a sign of anxiety over the prospect of instability and rising Russian influence so close to home.
