Gunfire was reported in Belfast tonight as police and army were drafted in to keep rival sectarian mobs apart at two of the city’s troublespots.

Doctors in east Belfast are criticising loyalist protests outside a surgery on the fringes of the Short Strand enclave.

Belfast Lord Mayor Sammy Wilson condemned the attack and predicted it could scupper efforts to attract visitors to the city.
