A WHOLE generation had been wiped out in the areas most devastated by the weekend’s huge earthquake in Pakistan, a military spokesman said yesterday, as UNICEF estimated up to 40,000 had been killed in the disaster.

A mortar shell meant to be fired in celebration of a wedding exploded prematurely today, killing at least 25 people, including the bridegroom and many of his relatives, officials said.
