Plans to build a respite care centre for sick children near Tralee, to honour the memory of two Kerry children who died of an incurable degenerative condition, have been put on hold following objections from a GAA club.

Landslides, flooded roads, and major bridges which were impassable for the first time in recent memory were recorded in Kerry after torrential rainfall in coastal and mountainous areas overnight on Monday and for most of yesterday.

Despite strong warnings that Kerry’s road network will deteriorate further, funding for the county council’s 2014 roadworks programme has been slashed by 34%.
