US PRESIDENT Barack Obama held up his boyhood home of Indonesia as an example to the Muslim world in a speech yesterday in which he said America was not at war with Islam but acknowledged it was hard to eradicate “years of mistrust”.

Dozens of injured survivors of a tsunami off western Indonesia languished yesterday at a sorely strapped hospital alongside a newly orphaned two-month-old baby found in a storm drain, as the death toll from the disaster rose above 400.

Two volcanoes have erupted on Russia’s far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, tossing massive ash clouds miles into the air, forcing flights to divert and blanketing one town with thick, heavy ash.

The death toll from a tsunami and a volcano rose to more than 300 today as more victims of Indonesia’s double disasters were found.

Indonesian officials today evacuated 11,000 villagers from around Mount Merapi volcano, as lava and superheated clouds of gas poured repeatedly down its upper slopes.
