The Court of Criminal Appeal has increased the prison sentence from one to five years imposed on a Dublin man for stabbing another man in what the court heard was an unprovoked attack.

An alcoholic who drunkenly stabbed a passer-by and then tried to slash the tyres on a taxi so he couldn't escape has been given a three year prison sentence in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Anthony Hunt has lashed out in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court at what he called "this trend in modern society for violence to be used as a first resort" in a case which arose from a trivial incident in a chipper.
