The post office at Carrigaholt in Co Clare has reopened — but only because a local farmer was able to take the postmaster through flood waters from his home, one of six left cut off by the sea.

Thousands have been left without power, roads have been ripped up and isolated homes have been cut off from the mainland after storms ravaged the country.

Many parts of the country are counting the cost of weeks of stormy weather, but Met Éireann has said the worst is over.
