Medical sleuths puzzling over three related bird flu cases in Thailand last autumn now strongly believe that two women who cared for a sick child both caught the virus from the girl.

Vietnam confirmed today that a 14-month-old baby who died earlier this month had tested positive for bird flu, bringing the region’s death toll from the disease to 30.
