VILLAGERS handed over chickens and other fowl for slaughter yesterday as Turkey stepped up efforts to stem the spread of a deadly strain of bird flu.

TESTS on five people, including a dead child, for possible bird flu in eastern Turkey have proved negative, a health ministry official said yesterday.
