The killing of 295 people aboard a Malaysian airliner brought down over eastern Ukraine sharply raised the stakes in a conflict between Kiev and pro-Moscow rebels in which Russia and the West back opposing sides.

Hundreds of people are feared dead after a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was apparently shot down over eastern Ukraine.

The Interfax agency has said a Malaysian passenger jet carrying 295 people has crashed in Ukraine.
