A man who was being questioned by gardaí investigating the murder of a pensioner in his home on the southside of Cork City on Monday has been released without charge.

A young man is being questioned about the violent death of a man in his 60s who was found battered to death inside his sheltered housing unit on the southside of Cork City yesterday.

Loud parties and arguments were not unusual at Joe O’Callaghan’s sheltered housing unit in the heart of Douglas, on the southside of Cork City.

The word ‘village’ gets bandied about when it comes to Cork city’s super-sized suburb Douglas, and it’s even pinned to the towering Douglas Village Shopping Centre and multi-storey car-park — but it’s in places like Grosvenor Mews that the village feel at least rings some bit true.

Cork County Council has announced that it will introduce pay parking in several areas of Douglas from May 1.
