Tens of thousands of landless rural workers marched in various states across Brazil to commemorate the seventh anniversary of one of the country’s bloodiest land-rights massacres.

A senior Brazilian police officer was sentenced to 228 years in prison today for killing 12 landless peasants in the remote eastern Amazon in 1996.
