Italian police today arrested scores of suspected mobsters in raids in eastern Sicily, including the man authorities said was the Mafia chief in the area.

Volcanic ash from Mount Etna fell on Catania in Sicily today, forcing authorities to close the airport overnight, airport officials said.

Mount Etna, Europe’s biggest and most active volcano, came to life again today, with a river of lava coming out of its mouth and a series of small quakes damaging buildings on its slopes, officials said.
