A VISIT a few years ago to a pesto maker in Genoa, where the thick sauce originated, showed the wonders of fresh basil grown especially for it. With a fresh, heady bouquet, it was magnificent. 

A DOLLOP of mayo can work wonders for the simplest sandwich. On hot new potatoes it’s a treat, and delicious smeared on barely cooked broccoli.

THIS terrific summer has brought with it superb produce that looks as good as it tastes.
