New thunderstorms brought more pounding rains to a waterlogged coastal community in north-eastern Australia today as a mayor said it could take a year to fully recover from the worst flooding in decades.

Flooded communities across eastern Australia could be under water for more than a week, with the clean-up bill expected to hit billions of dollars, officials said today.
