Nineteen people have been killed in Afghanistan after a team of suicide bombers targeted a provincial governor’s compound, police have confirmed.

At least one person has been killed in clashes between demonstrators and police during a protest in eastern Afghanistan against the arrest of a local religious leader, Afghan officials said today.

In an attack coordinated with US/British air strikes, the Afghan opposition tonight launched an attack on Taliban forces controlling the mountains surrounding the Bagram air force base north of Kabul.
