Helicopters airlifted food to hungry survivors today while rescuers struggled to reach remote areas devastated by Bangladesh’s worst cyclone in a decade, amid fears the death toll could hit 10,000.

Hundreds of thousands of survivors were trapped today as rescuers fought to reach towns along Bangladesh’s coast ravaged by a powerful cyclone that killed at least 1,723 people.

A cyclone that slammed into Bangladesh’s coast with 140mph winds killed at least 41 people, destroyed homes and forced 650,000 villagers to be evacuated, before heading inland and losing power today.

AT least 800 people remained missing in southern India yesterday and hundreds of fishermen were unaccounted for in Bangladesh after a severe storm in the Bay of Bengal killed 50 people, officials said.
