Pentagon officials have complained bitterly about what they called “deadly deceptions” by Iraqi troops pretending to surrender to US forces and then firing on the Americans.

American fighter jets have stepped up operations in the northern and southern no-fly zones of Iraq, possibly preparing the ground for an invasion.
