Tourists on the Greek resort of Santorini are facing candlelit dinners with warm beer after a power station fire left the entire island without electricity at the peak of the holiday season.

Authorities in Greece today confirmed the country’s first case of bird flu, on a turkey farm on the Aegean Sea island of Oinouses, near the Turkish coast.

About 300 illegal immigrants, most of them Iraqi Kurds, were believed to have come ashore on a Greek island today after being smuggled across the Aegean Sea aboard a small cargo ship, the Merchant Marine Ministry said.
