The Government is defending its new plans for a microloans system after opposition parties attacked the timing of the plan.

Fianna Fáil has criticised the coalition's announcement of a new loan scheme from credit unions and post offices to help people avoid moneylenders.

The Government is to issue loans of up to €1,000 to get people to turn away from moneylenders.
