THE only giant pandareleased into the wild after being bred in captivity has died, setting back China’s efforts to save the critically endangered species, state press reported yesterday.

China today released a panda bred in captivity into the wild for the first time, and the animal scampered into a nearby bamboo forest where he will be monitored via satellite.
