Burma’s military government will free opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi by May 17 and invite her party to join a constitutional convention, the country’s foreign minister said today.

Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi spent her 58th birthday today locked up in an undisclosed place by a military government that has remained defiant of demands by friends and foes to free her.

Burma’s foreign minister today said that pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is being kept in custody to protect her from an assassination attempt, and added that no timeframe can be given for her release.
