Investors in the British banking sector were spared more misery today after Royal Bank of Scotland posted better-than-expected losses of £3.6bn (4.08bn) for 2009.

Insurance group Legal & General unveiled a major deal last week when it bought the life assurance and unit trust business of Nationwide, a move worth about £285m (€427.5m).
