Yemeni security forces fired live bullets and tear gas on two pro-democracy demonstrations today, killing two people – including a 15-year-old student – as the government clamps down on a growing protest movement, witnesses said.

After nearly a quarter-century of severed ties, Iraq said it would resume diplomatic relations with neighbouring Syria – a move seen as a possible step toward stemming some of the unrelenting violence, which claimed another 100 lives.
