Former UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, who was elected Austrian president despite an international scandal about his secretive Second World War military service, died today, Austrian media reported. He was 88.

President Thomas Klestil of Austria has died a day after being airlifted to hospital suffering heart failure, a spokeswoman for Vienna’s General Hospital said.
